Police announce seasonal hunting arrests

Lieutenant Frank Lauricella of the Region 9 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Police today issued a mid-season summary of hunting-related enforcement actions that have occurred during the first two weeks of the regular deer season – from November 19 to December 2. Region 9 covers six counties: Erie, Niagara, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany.
“Since the start of regular season, Environmental Conservation Officers in Region 9 have reported a total of 209 enforcement actions against 138 defendants, in addition to responding to 264 calls for service,” Lt. Lauricella said. “Of the 209 enforcement actions, 89 were classified as misdemeanors and 55 involved the misuse of firearms. These statistics represent our agency’s commitment to public safety, and also reflect law enforcement’s role in ensuring the wise use of the state’s wildlife resources.”

In Allegany County, there were 29 enforcements, 23 misdemeanors and 11 people charged.
In Cattaraugus County, 21 were enforced, with 13 tickets going to 13 people.
According to DEC Region 9 Sportsman Educator Ken Baginski, "Statewide, there have been less hunting- related shooting incidents this year than there were last year at this time. 2011 is actually on track to potentially become one of the statistically safest years recorded in NYS hunting history. The lowest number of personal injury HRSIs in NYS was recorded in 2009 and totaled 26. With only 19 HRSIs statewide so far this year, this year's total could potentially be even lower than it was in 2009."
