KARE for Kane Seeking Project Submissions from Local Organizations!

The second annual KARE for Kane is scheduled for Friday, May 11^th from 9AM-7PM.  The Kane 

Area Development Center and Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise (KARE) are now accepting 

project submissions from non-profit organizations, municipalities, churches and schools in the 

Kane area.

Last year, 230 volunteers completed over 37 beautification and restoration projects including 

landscaping, painting, pruning, sidewalk sweeping, litter pick up and more!  We are hoping for an 

even bigger turnout this year!  All Kane area organizations are welcome to apply for volunteers.

Fire destroys building in Kane, PA

A Fire destroyed a building in Kane Tuesday.  Firefighters responded just before noon and quickly called for help from Mount Jewett and Sheffield. The garage was owned by Earl Rich and located at 210 Janeway Street in the Borough.  The Fire Marshal said a Harley Davidson motorcycle and lawnmower were also destroyed.  Investigators pegged the damage at $40,000…they listed the cause as accidental. There were no injuries. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 30 minutes.

Structure fire in Kane

Firefighters this hour are at a structure fire at 211 Haines Street in Kane. Firefighters have been called in from Kane, Mount Jewett and Sheffield. Initial reports said there may have been two buildings involved, but WVTT news radio has confirmed it’s a single building. Crews at the scene have said the building was well involved in fire. The call came in two minutes before noon.

Accident in Kane - No injury

State Police said a Bradford woman escaped injury this afternoon after he car crashed near Kane. Troopers said 22-year old Kristin Fiore was driving north on Route 66 when her car went off the road, struck a utility pole and several small tree's. Police said Fiore was not hurt but was charged with a speeding violation. Troopers said the crash happened about 2 pm Monday.

KCH Winter Walking Club at the Middle School

Kane Community Hospital Home Health Care has paved the way for the Winter Walking Club at Kane Middle School on Hemlock Avenue. 

The Club, launched by KCH in cooperation with Kane Area Middle School runs through the end of March and offers a free, safe walking venue during the winter months.   Walking is a great exercise and opportunity to catch up with friends and family. 

The Middle School hallways are available for walking, Monday through Friday, 5-8 p.m., on the days the school is open.  Students return to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.  Walking is not permitted in the Elementary School halls.

Please enter door #7, the main gym door.  There will be chairs and a rug to change into walking shoes.

Classic Holiday Cartoons at Friends’ Memorial Public Library

Friends’ Memorial Public Library in Kane will screen two animated classics on Thursday, December 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.  What holiday would be complete without Dr. Seuss’ animated timeless tale of the mean-spirited Grinch and his feeble attempt to steal the yuletide celebration of Whoville? Boris Karloff narrates this classic animated confection that’s the perfect festival of fun.  Following is the television classic featuring the Peanuts characters in the story of Charlie Brown's problematic efforts to mount a school Christmas pageant. KANE LUBRICANTS MANUFACTURER TO PROMOTE PRODUCT THROUGH POWERBOAT RACING

the team’s 2012 tunnel boat racing efforts, the team and company jointly announced

on December 14.

Kane Borough Council member dies

Jim Salvamoser, a Kane Borough Council member, died unexpectedly Thursday night. In addition to his duties on the Borough Council, Salvamoser also served as the Chair of the Borough Sewer Authority, a post he had held for more than a decade. Salvamoser was also on the Board of the Kane Area Industrial Development Corporation where he helped champion development in and around Kane. Members of the Development Agency were stunned by the news this morning. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Fire damages home in Kane

The Red Cross was called out overnight to help a family from Kane after a fire damaged their home. Kane firefighters responded just before midnight to the home at 629 Park Avenue and occupied Barbara & Gabrielle Floyd and their three children, ages 5,6 and 8.a home at 629 Park Avenue. Heavy smoke was reported, but there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately identified. The fire caused about $30,000 in damage.

Double digit tax hike in Kane approved

IT’S ONE OF THE BIGGEST TAX HIKES EVER IN KANE.  BOROUGH COUNCIL LAST NIGHT VOTED FOUR TO THREE TO RAISE TAXES ALMOST 28 PERCENT…UP TO TEN-POINT-875 MILLS.  THE KANE REPUBLICAN REPORTS OVER THIRTY PEOPLE JAMMED INTO THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS FOR THE MEETING…MANY OF THEM CALLING FOR POLICE OR OTHER LAYOFFS OF BOROUGH EMPLOYEES TO CUT EXPENSES RATHER THAN RAISING TAXES AT A TIME OF DOUBLE-DIGIT UNEMPLOYMENT AND DECREASING POPULATION IN KANE.

Kane 2012 budget

The tax rate for the Kane Borough 2012 budget is expected to increase when the borough council adopts its final budget on Monday. In the provisional plan, a 1.5-mil tax increase was proposed, but the revised budget appears to include a tax rate hike of four mills, or an increase of 34 percent. At that rate, a property assessed at $50,000 would take on an additional $200 in taxes on top of the approximately $394 currently paid each year. At a budget meeting held Thursday, council members discussed ways to cut back expenses, including the possible elimination of a full-time borough police officer position in exchange for part-timers. It was not clear Friday if all council members were in support of such a hefty tax rate hike for the borough. Reports indicated that some members would have rather seen smaller increases implemented over several years, but since former councils had not done so, a four mill tax increase may be unavoidable.

Friends’ Memorial Public Library supports McKean County SPCA

The kennels are full at the McKean County SPCA.  Many dogs and cats would love a good home.  Please come and adopt these special pets.  If you can’t adopt and would still like to help, a Christmas drive is being held at Friends’ Memorial Public Library.  Many pet items are needed including: trash bags (33 gallons or larger), liquid laundry and dish soap, bleach, paper towels, dry cat and kitten food, dog and puppy food,collars and leashes, and regular pet grooming products.  We also use partial bottles of laundry and dishwashing soap, rubbing alcohol, bleach, etc. Place your items under the Christmas tree at the library.  When you bring in your items, bring along a picture of your current four-legged, winged, or slithering friend living in your home.  We’ll find a place to hang it on the tree.  We can also place a picture in memory of a special pet on the tree. Supplies will be collected after the 2012 New Year.  Monetary donations are being accepted at the library, and at Northwest and Hamlin Banks.

Kane Cheerleaders

The Kane Cheerleading Competition team traveled to St. Marys Area High School this past Saturday and came home with 2nd place in the Varsity Division behind Elk County Catholic out of five teams in the division. 

Coach Niklaus Comments:  This was our second competition this season and we are already seeing many improvements in the routine.  The routine on Saturday was our best run to date and had a lot of excitement in it.  We also had a nice fan base there supporting the team as well.  Having the fans there was huge for us and is something we hope continues and grows as the season goes on.  A few stunts didn't go the way we wanted, but the team kept going through the difficulties.  It is fun to already start working on the little things in our routine this early in the season.  This team is one of the most coachable teams the staff has worked with and they take everything we are giving them and give 100%.  We are very excited for where the team will go this year.  Our next competition is in Emporium on Dec. 10.

The Kane Area High School Competition Cheerleading team participated in the Pennsylvania State Cheerleading Championships this past weekend at the Kovalchick Complex on the campus of the Indiana State University in Indiana, PA.  The team participated in the Small Varsity Division and finished in 8th place in the division.  This was the first competition of the season for the team and they went out there and put their best on the floor.

Foul play not suspected in death of Kane woman

Foul play is not suspected in the death of a 25-year-old Kane woman whose body was found Thursday afternoon behind a garage on Commons Alley in the borough.


"We don't suspect foul play," Kane Borough Police Chief Brian Hillard said Friday in commenting on the death of Natasha Mattis of Pine Avenue.


According to the police chief, the cause of death will be determined at an autopsy in Erie. He said Dr. Eric Vey, the Erie County forensic pathologist, is expected to conduct the autopsy Monday.


Tim Robinson, 29, of Kane discovered the woman's body and called the 911 emergency center. Kane Police Officer Heath Boyer responded to the scene at 3:34 p.m. Thursday.


Robinson said he found the body when he went looking for his dog.


Robinson, who is associated with Tim's Plumbing, Heating and Cooling along Fraley Street, Kane, said he let his dog out a rear door that faces Commons Alley.


When his dog failed to promptly return, Robinson said he went looking for his pet and discovered the body lying on the ground in "a fetal position" next to a railroad tie.


"I tried to wake her up," Robinson said. He said he then called 911.


Mattis was enrolled as a student at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. She was "on track" to graduate in April with a degree in communications, according to a spokesman for the college. 

Cause of death for Kane woman still unknown

Authorities are still attempting to determine the cause of death of 25-year old Natasha Mattis of Kane. Mattis' body was discovered Thursday behind the Arlington hotel on Fraley Street in Kane. After a preliminary exam and investigation, McKean County Deputy Coroner Sam Cummings has said the death does not appear suspicious. Mattis was a Pitt-Bradford student and a former intern with Colonial Radio Group, the parent company of WVTT. A Mass of Christian Burial, with the Rev. Philip Pinczewski officiating, will be celebrated privately at St.Callistus Church. Burial will be in St. Callistus Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be

Body of former Colonial Radio Group intern found

Police are continuing to investigate Thursday’s discovery of a body behind the Arlington Hotel on Fraley Street in Kane. WVTT McKean County news Director Jeff Andrulonis said the body was identified as 25-year Natasha Mattis of Kane. Mattis was a Pitt-Bradford student and was a former intern at Colonial Radio Group. Deputy Coroner Sam Cummings says the cause of death has not yet been determined. Authorities aren’t releasing further information as their investigation continues.

Olean Radio Stations Swap Frequencies

Olean, NY-- WBYB “Big Bob” and WVTT NewsRadio are swapping their Olean frequencies (96.7FM and 99.1FM) effective Wednesday morning, October 19, 2011. Currently, Big Bob operates on 95.3 in Smethport, PA and 96.7 in Olean, NY and WVTT NewsRadio operates on 103.9 in Kane, PA and 99.1 in Olean, NY. However, beginning October 19^th, Big Bob will operate on 95.3 and 99.1 while WVTT NewsRadio will operate on 103.9 and 96.7.

“While most local stations seem to be comfortable never changing, CRG is just the opposite,” said Jeff Andrulonis, President and CEO of Colonial Radio Group (CRG), which owns the radio stations. He added, “when I see an opportunity to improve and better our programming, I jump on it.” The request to swap frequencies was approved by the Federal Communications Commission effective for Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

     Andrulonis said two national power house talk show hosts are expected to be added to the line up on WVTT in the next few months. According to Andrulonis, “this gets really technical and complicated so let me make it easy…in order the make the changes I want to and bring these syndicated hosts on board and to continue to improve our programming, I needed to swap channels with Big Bob and ‘VTT.”  Earlier this month, CRG brought three cameras to its studios and put its WVTT morning news show on WONS-TV in Olean (Time Warner cable 15).

     Andrulonis and his wife Christy live in Smethport. They also own The Mountain / 106.3 WXMT and Olean’s 98.7 and Olean’s Fox Sports Radio 93.9FM. Andrulonis concluded by saying “I’ll never be happy just being…routine. I expect more-I want more and so should our listeners.”
