State Lawmakers Pushing Drug Testing Legislation

Assemblyman Andy Goodell and state senator Cathy Young are moving on an agenda to “clean up the system” with welfare reform throughout New York. This legislation would allow social services to randomly conduct drug testing of those receiving welfare benefits. Those testing positive for drug use would be required to receive treatment. The legislation is designed to help drug users find employment and get help if they need it. Commissioner Goodell believes that welfare benefits should not be abused and that it’s hard for people to get jobs if they are using illegal drugs and failing employment drug tests. If someone refuses to participate they will be dropped form the welfare recipient list.
