Allegany County: two charged with DWI during weekend patrols

Sheriff Rick Whitney, along with STOP DWI Coordinator Linda Edwards, reports that over the past weekend, members of the Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Department of Environmental Conservation and Officers from the Alfred, Andover, Angelica, Cuba, Friendship and Wellsville police departments took part in the statewide “STOP DWI Crackdown” campaign. Throughout the weekend, officers conducted roving patrols that lead to the arrest of 2 persons for Driving While Intoxicated by Alcohol or Drugs.

These roving patrols, as well as two Roadside Sobriety Checkpoints on State Route 417 and County Road 12 at the Wellsville / Andover town line and on State Route 19 in the Town of Amity, resulted in 13 citations for various Vehicle and Traffic Law violations on Saturday evening alone. It is estimated that officers checked between 180 and 200 vehicles in a three hour period during these Sobriety checkpoints on St. Patrick’s Day.

Sheriff Whitney commends the citizen of Allegany County for recognizing the need to stay out from behind the wheel when drinking. “It is very evident after speaking to the officers that participated in this detail that the citizens of Allegany County have become educated to the consequences of Drinking and Driving and have turned to the use of Designated Drivers and other means of transportation when drinking away from home. I am encouraged that the numbers of arrests were down from past details and would like to thank the citizens of Allegany County for doing their part to make our roads safer than in years past.”

Linda Edwards added “the Allegany County STOP DWI Office is grateful to all of the police officers who gave of their time for the St. Patrick’s Day DWI Patrols. Our paramount concern is the safety of the community and the effort of our enforcement agencies is instrumental in accomplishing this. We are hopeful that continued efforts to educate the public regarding the consequences of driving while intoxicated will be effective in reducing arrest numbers.”

The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown campaign is a joint effort on the part of the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Police, New York State Sheriff’s Association, the New York State Chiefs of Police Association, and the New York State STOP-DWI Association.
