Byrne Commits To Join The Men’s Swimming Team

St. Bonaventure University Athletic News

Head men's swimming coach Sean McNamee Thursday announced the signing of Gregg Byrne to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to join the St. Bonaventure men's swimming team beginning in the 2012-13 season.

A current senior at Monroe-Woodbury High School, Byrne was the O.C.I.A.A. champion in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle last year as a junior. He was also the Section IX champion in the 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle and 200 medley relay, qualifying for the New York State meet in four events.

"We are excited to have Gregg joining the SBU swimming family," McNamee said. "He comes to Bona's from a very strong high school and swim club background, swimming for Monroe-Woodbury High School with head coach Justin Wright and the New York Sharks Swim Club under coach Todd Langenmayr. He comes to SBU with times from his junior year that will make him an immediate impact, even before his current competitive season begins."

Byrne owns the Monroe-Woodbury High record in the 200 medley relay, and has also won the Coach Most Outstanding Competitor Award.

Born on March 29, 1994 in the Bronx, Byrne intends to major in psychology. He is the lone early signee of the fall period for McNamee, and there is another NLI signing period in the spring.
