Allegheny
County Executive, Rich Fitzgerald, says the county will issue photo voter
identification cards through the Community College of Allegheny County
and the Kane Regional Centers, a group of county-owned nursing homes.
Fitzgerald, a Democrat, is a critic
of the state's new law requiring photo IDs at polling place, but says
issuing the IDs and helping people vote is a "core function'' of
government if the law withstands a Commonwealth Court hearing on its
legality Oct. 2. Fitzgerald says he's not sure how much
the program will cost, and he hasn't run the specifications past the
Corbett administration, which pushed the new law. But Fitzgerald says
he's confident the program will be legal because the law allows voters
to use identification cards issued by senior care
facilities and state-affiliated colleges.
