Senator Schumer Taking Action by Requiring Capacity Limits for Recreational Boats

A fourth of July boating accident in Long Island that killed 3 children is getting the attention of United States Senator Charles Schumer. During the fourth of July holiday a yacht reportedly carrying 27 passengers capsized, killing the three victims. Authorities believe that the boat was overcrowded. Schumer made an announcement yesterday that he is taking action to prevent accidents like this from happening again by requiring capacity limits for recreational boats over 20 feet in length. Schumer also announced that those limits must be visibly posted onboard to educate and warn operators and their passengers of the vessels’ total passenger capabilities and weight load. Schumer says that having capacity limits posted for everything from classrooms to ballrooms, but not recreational fishing vessels over 20 feet makes no sense.
