PA and NY Tied for Second Place in Number of Athletes Competing in Olympics

Pennsylvania is tied for second place with New York for states with the most Olympic athletes in London. There are 35 Olympians, 14 men and 21 women, who claim Pennsylvania as their home state. Nine of the 16 women on the U.S. field hockey team, and two of the six women on the U.S. tennis team, Of the 19 men from Pennsylvania on Team USA, the best-known is probably NBA star Kobe Bryant. He won a gold medal with the U.S. men's basketball team in 2008.

New York State is well-represented. A contingent of 37 athletes who call the Empire State home. The breakdown for New York: six athletes in track and field; five in fencing; four in rowing; three each in equestrian, sailing and swimming; two in boxing, judo, and women's basketball; and one each in men's volleyball, women's soccer, archery, field hockey, shooting, cycling and gymnastics. It's the first time Team USA has had more women than men.
