NYS Ranked for Well-Being of Children

A new analysis of the well-being of America's children puts kids in New York in the top half in areas of health and education. But the state was in the bottom half when measured in terms of economic and family well-being. The annual Kids Count report released Wednesday, shows that successes and challenges in New York largely mirror national trends. New York has seen gains in graduation rates and fourth-grade reading proficiency, even as higher numbers of children are living in poverty, and with parents who lack secure jobs. The report by the Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation ranked New York 29th overall out of the 50 states. When broken down, New York placed 15th in health, 19th in education, 32nd in economic well-being and 34th in family and community.
