REED FOCUSED ON JOBS, TAX OVERHAUL, ENERGY POLICY AND DEFICIT REDUCTION; Congressman Ready to Continue Policy Work in 2012

Congressman Tom Reed today outlined four broad areas of policy focus for 2012: job creation, overhauling the tax code, energy policy and reducing the annual budget deficit.  “Jobs are the number one issue we hear about as we travel the district,” Reed said. “The most important thing we can do is continue our work of getting government out of the way so that we can re-employ people.” An additional area of focus for Reed, a member of the Committee on Ways and Means, is streamlining and overhauling the tax code. “The tax code is 70,000 pages long,” he observed. “Washington should not be picking winners and losers with the tax code. It needs to be more simple and more fair.” “We need to come together and create a comprehensive domestic-oriented energy policy to reduce our dependence on Middle East oil,” Reed continued. “With the turbulence in the Middle East, we need to explore and develop our long-term domestic resources.”

Deficit reduction rounds out Reed’s three areas of policy focus for 2012. “I ran and was elected in 2010 on a platform of getting spending under control and addressing our national debt,” he said. “Every day we put more debt on the backs of our children and grandchildren. We need to get our spending under control.”
Reed worked in Washington last week getting ready for 2012. “We’re ready to work,” he commented. “I am open to finding long-term solutions with anyone willing to put politics aside and create good policy.”

Reed was the primary sponsor of 19 bills, amendments and resolutions in 2011.
