Kane Cheerleaders bring home awards

The Kane Varsity Competition Cheerleading team travelled to the Elk County Catholic Cheer Frenzy on Saturday and came home with first in the Varsity Division as well as the Judges Choice Award for the entire competition.  The past week was a very difficult week for the team as they lost a vital member due to an injury.  One of the team’s youngest members, an alternate, Dana Swartwood, had to step in and fill the void.  The alternates are like the bench in other sports in that they learn the routine and may never get the opportunity to step in, but come to practice every day.  Another member, Delaney Oertly also had to learn a new part as well.  The group worked hard through one practice to learn all their new positions and deserve high praise for making things work.  The rest of the team also stepped up their game as well, hitting stunts they have yet to hit all season long. Kayla Kerner placed second in the Senior Jump off and Senior Tumble Off.  Brittany Kowatch placed first in the Senior Tumble Off.

Coach Niklaus comments:  This was an eye opening day for the team.  I think we all finally realized what the team is capable of through hard work and dedication at the few practices we have.  Everyone on the team worked hard this past week and we finally saw some success on some of our more advanced stunts. We are doing a few things no other teams in the area are doing and this past weekend, the team got rewarded for their efforts.  To win your division is great, but the icing on the cake was winning the Judges Choice Award for the entire day over all teams in all divisions including All Star.  This is the first time a Kane Team has won this award and hopefully won’t be the last as the season goes on.  The coaching staff is very proud of the team for their great win this past weekend.  However, we still have things to fix and more difficulty to add as the season goes on.  This was the perfect next step in our season.  Our next competition is the Kane Cheerleading Boosters Mid-Winter Cheer Classic at the Kane Area High School on February 4.  There will be 49 teams in several different divisions competing starting at 10:30am and ending around 7:00pm.
