AU women's basketball team drops heartbreaker

The Alfred University women's basketball team dropped a 62-8 decision to host St. John Fisher College, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

AU held a 58-54 advantage with 2:36 left in the contest, but St. John Fisher would rallied and go on a eight to nothing run to close out the game to earn the victory.

With the loss, AU falls to 7-8 overall and 0-4 in Empire 8 Conference play. The Cardinals, who shot 40 percent from the floor while holding AU to 37 percent shooting, improve to 6-9 overall, and 2-2 in Empire 8 play.

Sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) recorded yet another double-double on 12 points and a game-high 14 boards to pace the Saxons. Senior guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) netted 15 points sinking five shots from behind the arc and freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals.

Portia Velasco netted a game-high 21 points and Meghan Soja registered a double-double scoring 17 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Alfred returns to action Friday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m., when take on host Utica College.
