Turnovers hurt Saxons in loss to visiting Behrend

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women’s basketball team dropped a 75-57 decision to visiting Penn State-Behrend Friday afternoon at the McLane Center.

AU (7-2) trailed by only a point (31-30) at the halftime break before Behrend outscored the Saxons 24-6 in the first seven minutes of the second half to take a commanding 19-point lead (55-36). Turnovers proved to be a big difference in the contest, as Alfred committed 26 miscues to only nine for the visitors. Alfred lost despite outrebounding Behrend, 43-33, and shooting 43 percent from the floor to 40 percent for the Lions.

The loss wasted an outstanding performance by AU sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean), who scored a team-high 22 points on nine-of-12 shooting while pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. Williamson’s big day was offset by Behrend’s Britany Wilwohl and Aly Eagle, who netted 24 and 23 points, respectively. The pair combined to sink six of Behrend’s seven three-point shots.

Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Mercy) scored 12 points and junior guard Jamie Perry (Hanibal, NY/Hannibal) added nine for Alfred. Senior guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) dished out a game-high seven assists.

Holly Bourquin scored 13 points and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds for Behrend (7-2), while Kim Pohl had a team-leading five assists.

AU plays next on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m. at Geneseo.
